Issue: Diplomatic Conference for an Arms Trade Treaty

Newark MCCJ partake in the Diplomatic Conference for an Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) Conference at the U.N.

After much preparation, the Arms Trade Treaty negotiations are in full swing throughout July at the U.N. in New York City. Fr. John Converset and Fr. JP Pezzi of the Comboni Justice and Peace Office have been especially involved, attending on behalf of VIVAT International. They’ve observed much in the first 10 days, including the grandstanding of a nation or two that caused delays at the beginning of the Conference.

In July 2007, the United Nations Security Council authorized the AU-UN Hybrid Operation in Darfur, better known as UNAMID, with the mandate to protect civilians. Since then, various hurdles have stood in the way of the full deployment of the force. Even though it is still not fully deployed, many Darfuri civilians now rely on the peacekeepers to provide protection and stability in the present realities of the conflict.
