Fr. Dawit didn’t always intend to be a missionary. However, after entering the seminary he developed an awareness for sharing the Gospel outside of his home country of Ethiopia.
Born to a Catholic family in Addis Ababa, Fr. Dawit is the middle of three boys. His older brother lives and works in Atlanta. He spent four years studying theology at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, Il.
After ordination in 1997, Fr. Dawit worked in Zambia for eight years in the parish setting and in vocations. After that he worked in Ethiopia for eight years. He is currently finishing his last year there and will take a sabbatical in England. After a year off, Fr. Dawit hopes to return to Zambia.
Most of his years have been spent working with young people in formation or through vocations. Fr. Dawit said this work has been very fulfilling for him and has created many happy memories.
You can meet Fr. Dawit this summer as he travels the United States for mission appeals. Check the schedule to see if he will be visiting a parish near you. He will also be at our Meet the Missionaries evening in Cincinnati at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 16.
